Programme
I work for RIoT and, within this company, I am responsible for implementing the ReefTEMP project in Réunion. As part of this project, we deploy and maintain operational devices that collect data (e.g., temperature, salinity, humidity ...) at a frequency of 2Hz. The devices are located in hard-to-reach areas such as forests, lagoons, or buoys near the coast. Data is stored on an SD card and operators periodically collect it (e.g., every 6 months). The data is then processed and made available on an open data portal. It serves various purposes, such as monitoring climate change, assessing the impact of local weather events, human activities, or identifying areas compatible with human activities (...). Users of this data are no longer satisfied with merely accessing it after the fact. They now require applications that need data to be available within minutes of measurement. They have pressured the ReefTEMP project funders (i.e., the European Union) to update the regulatory framework. Starting April 1, 2025, data must comply with the following new requirements:
- Be made available on the open data platform within 10 minutes of acquisition by the sensor
- With a precision of X
If we fail to meet these new constraints, we will lose the contract. Most of our devices are based on STM32WL55 MCUs with added SD cards. We can update the firmware on the MCU. However, it is not economically viable to replace the devices or even modify the hardware on existing ones. A colleague suggested that there is significant statistical dependence between each sample, which could allow for efficient compression. However, from my distant memory, efficient compression does not seem compatible with the strict data availability deadlines. By November 15, I need a solution, its C implementation, and a proof of concept that can be deployed on the STM32WL55 MCU. As an example, I provide you with a time series of temperatures from our sensors. It is representative of the dynamics of the metrics measured by our network devices. I thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. The solution must stay within 30 man-days.
